On Sunday Oct. 3, Jesse Willms, a noted Internet marketing businessman, participated in the 2010 CIBC Run for the Cure in Edmonton as part of a team that raised $31,000 for breast cancer research and prevention.
The Run For The Cure is the largest fundraising event of the year for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. In Edmonton more than 10,000 people ran or walked to raise money, and a total of 170,000 people participated in similar runs across Canada.
Willms was invited to speak to the crowd at the end of the run because his team raised the most amount of money at the Edmonton run.
He said that even though he has never had cancer affect his life, he has seen how it has devastated the lives of others. Willms went on to say that he hoped that his efforts would not only provide funding to make breast cancer a thing of the past, but also raise awareness of the good works of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
The foundation raises money for breast cancer research and prevention and helps spread information about the disease in order to help women live longer, healthier lives. More than 23,000 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, and Willms said these women need all of our help. He reminded us that the victims of breast cancer are our mothers, daughters, sisters, lovers and friends.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so Willms said it made sense for him to participate in the run and do his part. This is far from the first time Willms has tried to help the fight against breast cancer; over the summer he donated $25,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Fund.
Willms said he could not take full credit for his fundraising on Sunday, noting that he was part of a larger team of his friends and co-workers who all worked together to participate in the run for the fight against breast cancer.
